Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet: Refreshing Breeze That Brings Joy (2025)

We spent a week driving the Mercedes-Benz CLE 200 Cabriolet, a luxury convertible that merges the strengths of the former C-Class and E-Class. In this rare segment of open-top cars, the CLE Cabriolet stands out as a model of refinement and comfort, while staying true to the stylistic and technological signature of the German brand. Here’s our detailed review after a week of driving.

Refined Design

From the first glance, the Mercedes CLE Cabriolet impresses with its elegant lines and imposing dimensions. At 4.85 meters in length and with a wheelbase of nearly 2.87 meters, the CLE Cabriolet positions itself between the C-Class and E-Class, exuding a presence that speaks of class. It distinguishes itself from competitors with a subtle blend of sportiness and luxury, a characteristic hallmark of Mercedes.

The soft fabric roof, available in several colors like black, red, or gray, integrates seamlessly into the overall design. It can be lowered in 20 seconds at speeds of up to 60 km/h, allowing for an elegant experience of open-air driving. The sleek LED headlights and the signature “shark nose” add a contemporary touch to this model, which maintains the classic spirit of Mercedes-Benz convertibles.

Luxurious Interior

Inside, the CLE 200 Cabriolet makes no compromises on comfort and technology. The first thing that strikes you is the quality of materials and impeccable finish. Everything, from the seats to the dashboard, exudes sophistication. The front seats, both heated and ventilated, offer exceptional comfort, further enhanced by the Airscarf system, which blows warm air onto the neck to make top-down driving enjoyable even in cooler weather.

The cockpit’s centerpiece is the 11.9-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen, which can be electrically tilted to avoid sun glare. This well-thought-out feature highlights Mercedes’ focus on improving ergonomics and user experience under all conditions. The display is clear, customizable, and intuitive, and it operates using the MBUX system, well-known for its smoothness and functional richness.

As is often the case with convertibles, rear space is a bit tight, especially for taller individuals. However, Mercedes has optimized the space with 14mm more legroom and 22mm more shoulder room compared to the old C-Class Cabriolet. Still, rear passengers might find the seatbacks too upright for long trips, but for short getaways, the space remains comfortable.

Under the Hood: A Sufficient 4-Cylinder Engine

The Mercedes CLE 200 Cabriolet is equipped with a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine, delivering 204 horsepower, paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system. This setup provides decent power for a comfort-oriented convertible. While it may not have the firepower of an AMG, it’s more than enough for relaxed journeys, whether cruising along the coast or navigating city streets.

During our test, we particularly appreciated the engine’s smoothness, especially in Comfort mode. The 204 horses are docile and pleasant to handle, while the nine-speed automatic transmission delivers smooth shifts, though it lacks a bit of responsiveness in Sport mode. For those seeking more punch, the more powerful CLE 300 model could be worth considering.

Relaxed Driving, But Not Sporty

On the road, the Mercedes CLE 200 Cabriolet offers a driving experience centered on comfort and relaxation. In Comfort mode, the suspension effectively absorbs road imperfections, and the cabin remains impressively quiet, even with the top down. The Aircap system, which deploys a rigid lamella on the windshield to deflect wind over the cabin, works well, though turbulence is still noticeable at higher speeds, especially for rear passengers.

That said, don’t expect a sporty drive with this model. The CLE 200 is designed for those who enjoy serene drives rather than adrenaline-fueled thrills. The steering, while precise, is slightly over-assisted, and the chassis prefers a calm driving style over high-speed cornering.

Conclusion

In summary, the Mercedes-Benz CLE 200 Cabriolet perfectly fulfills its role as a luxury convertible. Its elegant design, sumptuous interior, and innovative technologies make it an excellent choice for those who prioritize comfort and refinement. While it doesn’t reinvent the genre and its engine may lack power for more demanding drivers, it compensates with a relaxing and enjoyable driving experience.

With a starting price of €74,650, this convertible is not for all budgets, but it offers a great alternative in an increasingly rare segment. For open-top driving enthusiasts, the Mercedes CLE 200 Cabriolet is a reliable and luxurious road companion, provided you embrace its more contemplative than sporty character.

Pros:

  • Exceptional driving comfort
  • Luxurious interior finishings
  • Elegant and timeless design

Cons:

  • Engine may feel underpowered for performance enthusiasts
  • Limited rear space
  • Automatic transmission could be more responsive
