Le Hameau de la Semois: A Riverside Escape in the Belgian Ardennes
Follow the Semois beyond the centre of Bouillon and the town soon gives way to forest, water and the softer contours of the Ardennes. This is where Floréal Holidays has created Le Hameau de la Semois, a new collection of wooden lodges shaped around life outdoors.

Bouillon is only fifteen minutes away on foot, yet the setting feels distinctly removed from town. The river runs alongside the domain, the forest fills the horizon and the lodges occupy the land without trying to dominate it.

Lodges designed around the landscape
The thirteen Cocoons de la Semois are the most intimate option. Conceived with the simplicity of a hotel room, they include a bed, bathroom and coffee machine, but no kitchen. They are designed for travellers who want to wake beside the river without needing the space or equipment of a conventional holiday home.
The larger lodges have two or three bedrooms, equipped kitchens and living areas that open onto private terraces. Five VIP lodges add bathrobes, sun loungers and a welcome set, though the essential appeal remains the same: having breakfast outside, returning from a walk without changing out of muddy clothes and letting the day follow the weather.

Several lodges accept dogs. This sounds like a minor practical point, but it makes sense in a region where much of the pleasure lies in walking through the forest. A Dogs Club and play area are planned for them, while guests arriving by bicycle can use a secure storage room. Travellers in vans, motorhomes and tents have their own part of the site, with access to water, electricity and shared sanitary facilities.
Halliru, from breakfast to dinner
The domain’s brasserie, Halliru, is also open to people who are not staying overnight. That detail should help it become part of local life rather than an enclosed holiday resort restaurant.
Ardennes chef Tristan Martin, who trained in Belgium and France, developed the menu around straightforward regional cooking. The current selection includes collaborations with producers such as Brasserie de Rochehaut and Gin de la Semois. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served inside or on the terrace overlooking the water.

Meals do not have to take place in the restaurant. Guests can collect dishes to eat in their lodge, order a barbecue kit or arrange a raclette evening. Breakfast products are also available from the shop, which makes an early coffee on the terrace a realistic option rather than a carefully staged promise.
The river leads back to Bouillon
The domain’s position gives guests direct access to the forests and trails around the Semois. Walks, cycling, yoga, outdoor activities and cultural visits can be arranged without turning the stay into a rigid programme.

Le Hameau also develops themed stays around the region. Its current programme includes trail weekends and autumn packages combining lodge accommodation, guided activities and meals at Halliru.

Le Hameau de la Semois is less interesting as a catalogue of facilities than as a flexible way of staying in the Ardennes. A couple can choose a small room beside the water. Friends can share a lodge and cook together. Families can walk into Bouillon without taking the car. The architecture provides the necessary comfort, then leaves enough space for the river and forest to set the tone.
