Bell & Ross BR-03 Space Mission: Time in Orbit

Bell & Ross BR-03 Space Mission: Time in Orbit

A spacecraft for the minutes, the Moon for the hours. Bell & Ross gives its square watch a sci-fi twist, in a limited edition of 999 pieces.

The Moon tells the hour. A spaceplane points to the minutes. With the BR-03 Space Mission, Bell & Ross replaces traditional hands with a moving space scene. A blue Earth fills part of the dial, stars scatter across the background, and a tiny red dot represents Mars. There is plenty to look at before you even check the time.

The design works through two moving elements. Earth and the Moon are printed on a transparent disc that turns like an hour hand, with the Moon marking the hours. The spacecraft makes its own circuit to indicate the minutes. Their changing positions rearrange the scene throughout the day.

That spacecraft is Vortex, a reusable orbital vehicle concept developed by Dassault Aviation. Envisaged to travel between Earth and orbital platforms, it is designed to take off and land on a runway like an aircraft. Still a concept, it brings a specific aerospace reference to the dial.

The setting is just as considered. Black aventurine glass creates the starry backdrop, while the micro-blasted black ceramic case keeps the surrounding frame matt and restrained. Against it, Earth’s bright blue curve stands out. The familiar BR-03 shape, a circle inside a square with four visible screws, retains its cockpit-instrument character.

At 41 mm across and 10.60 mm thick, the watch houses the automatic BR-CAL.325 movement, with a 54-hour power reserve. Sapphire crystal with an anti-reflective coating, water resistance to 100 metres, and black rubber and synthetic fabric strap options complete the specification.

Following the BR-03 Astro from 2025, the Space Mission gives Bell & Ross’s aviation roots a more playful expression. The pleasure is in watching an instrument-inspired dial loosen up, with the Moon quietly doing the work of an hour hand.
