A Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Sells at Auction for a Record Price

On February 1, 2025, the 1954 Mercedes-Benz W 196 R Streamliner was sold for €51 155 000 at an auction organized by RM Sotheby’s at the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. Becoming the most expensive Grand Prix car ever sold at auction, it sparked fierce competition among collectors.

Originally from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, this historic vehicle, driven by legends like Fangio, marked the golden age of motorsport. The proceeds will support the museum’s collection restoration and expansion efforts.

This sale reaffirms Mercedes-Benz’s position as one of the most prestigious brands in the collector car market.
