Test drive – Ford Puma Gen-E 2026 : An Electric Crossover That Fits Naturally Into Everyday Life
From the first few kilometres, it feels familiar, compact and easy to place on the road. During our time with it, we used it exactly as we would in everyday life: city driving, motorway runs, shopping trips, tight parking spaces and a few spontaneous detours without constantly thinking about efficiency or remaining range.
And that is probably where the Puma Gen-E makes its strongest case. It never feels like an electric car that forces you to change your habits. You simply get in and drive.
Design and Dimensions: Familiar, but With an Electric Twist
Ford has wisely avoided completely reinventing the Puma for its move to electric power. The overall shape remains instantly recognisable, with the same compact proportions and sporty profile that have always helped the Puma stand out.
The main changes are subtle. The front end is cleaner and more closed off, while a number of aerodynamic details help improve efficiency. It looks modern without trying too hard to appear futuristic.
We actually like that approach. The Puma Gen-E blends naturally into everyday life. It looks just as at home in a city centre as it does outside a restaurant or packed for a weekend away.
Its size is another major advantage. In narrow streets, crowded car parks or underground garages, the Puma never feels intimidating. Compared with many electric SUVs that have grown increasingly large and heavy, this more compact footprint is refreshing.

Interior and Ergonomics: Simple and Easy to Understand
Inside, the Puma Gen-E keeps things relatively straightforward. The digital displays provide all the information you need, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make it easy to bring your usual apps and navigation into the car.
The driving position feels natural almost immediately, and the gear selector mounted behind the steering wheel frees up useful space around the centre console.
After a few days, though, it is the practicality that really starts to stand out. The Puma makes excellent use of its compact dimensions, with plenty of luggage space at the rear, additional storage beneath the boot floor and a small front compartment that is ideal for charging cables.
These are not necessarily the details that impress during the first five minutes with a car, but they are exactly the things you start appreciating once you have lived with it for a while.

Range: The 400 km Mark Makes a Difference
For 2026, the Puma Gen-E receives a revised battery with 46.86 kWh of usable capacity, increasing its official WLTP range to as much as 417 km.
More important than the figure itself is what it does for confidence behind the wheel. With more than 400 km available on paper, you simply think less about charging. A full day of errands, commuting and spontaneous trips no longer feels like something that needs careful planning.
Ford has also resisted the temptation to fit an oversized battery. Instead, the focus remains on efficiency and keeping weight under control, with official energy consumption around 13 kWh/100 km.
Of course, longer motorway journeys or colder weather will reduce that range, but during normal everyday use, the Puma Gen-E feels much less restrictive than its relatively small battery might suggest.
DC charging at up to around 100 kW also means you can add a useful amount of range during a coffee stop when travelling further.
Driving Experience: Light, Responsive and Relaxed
The first thing we noticed on the road was how easy the Puma Gen-E feels to drive.
In town, the instant response from the electric motor makes it feel lively without being aggressive. The steering is light enough for daily use but still precise, and its compact dimensions make squeezing through traffic or parking in tight spaces surprisingly stress-free.
The One Pedal mode also becomes addictive once you get used to it. At first, the stronger regenerative braking can feel a little abrupt, but after a short while you naturally start judging traffic and slowing the car simply by easing off the accelerator. In stop-start traffic, it makes the whole experience noticeably more relaxing.
Away from the city, the Puma still retains some of that familiar Ford character. It is not pretending to be a hot hatch, but it does feel more agile than many small electric SUVs. There is a lightness to the way it changes direction, and you can actually enjoy a winding road rather than simply tolerate it.
On the motorway, the personality changes again. The electric powertrain makes the cabin pleasantly quiet, while the ride remains comfortable enough for longer journeys.
The arrival of BlueCruise for the 2026 model also adds something genuinely useful. On compatible roads, the system allows hands-free driving while still requiring the driver to keep their eyes on the road. On long and repetitive motorway stretches, it can make the journey feel noticeably less tiring.

Conclusion: An EV You Do Not Have to Overthink
After spending time with the Ford Puma Gen-E, what stays with us most is just how normal it feels to use.
You get in, connect your phone, select D and go. It is easy around town, comfortable enough for motorway journeys and practical enough to handle a weekend away.
The improved range only strengthens that feeling. With more than 400 km available on paper, you spend less time thinking about charging and more time simply using the car.
The Puma Gen-E is not trying to be the most powerful, the most futuristic or the most extreme electric car in its class. Instead, it focuses on being practical, efficient and genuinely pleasant to drive.
And after a few days behind the wheel, that simplicity might be one of its biggest strengths.
