The Mercedes C-Class Estate returns in full force with a new version that blends elegance, cutting-edge technology, and performance tailored to long-distance drivers. After spending a week behind its wheel, here are our thoughts on this versatile station wagon that, despite a few shortcomings, stands out as a solid choice.
A Design That Always Impresses
At first glance, the Mercedes C-Class Estate captivates with its timeless and harmonious design. Its fluid, elegant lines, inherited from its larger siblings, are complemented by modern elements such as sleek headlights and the prominent Mercedes grille. With a length of 4.75 meters, this estate is longer than its predecessor, offering more space without losing its visual dynamism.
Our test model featured a “Spectral Blue” finish, giving it a chic and contemporary touch. The 17-inch wheels, although modest, contribute to the overall balance of the design. In short, this estate is elegant without being ostentatious—a quality that will appeal to those seeking understated refinement.
Inside: High-Tech Comfort
Inside, the C-Class Estate impresses with its modern and high-tech cabin. The dashboard is dominated by two digital screens: a 12.3-inch display for the instruments and an 11.9-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system. These interfaces, supported by the MBUX system, offer crisp graphics and a seamless user experience. Special mention goes to the voice assistant, activated by a simple “Hey Mercedes,” which allows you to control most functions without taking your eyes off the road.
While the overall finish is premium, there are a few hard plastics in the lower sections that feel out of place in a vehicle of this class. The seats, however, are a highlight: spacious, well-padded, and electrically adjustable. Rear passengers benefit from improved legroom, making the back seat a comfortable space for two adults. However, the middle seat remains more symbolic than practical, as is often the case in this segment.
The 490-liter trunk is practical, though slightly smaller than some competitors. Thankfully, the foldable rear bench expands the space for family trips or small moves.
Under the Hood: A Tireless Traveler
Our test model, the 220d version equipped with a 204-horsepower diesel engine, is clearly aimed at long-distance drivers. Combined with mild-hybrid technology via a 20-horsepower starter-generator, this engine delivers an impressive range of 1,300 km on a single tank. Yes, you read that right! After a round trip to La Rochelle at a steady pace (around 150 km/h), we recorded an average consumption of just 5.7 l/100 km. At a time when electric cars are gaining ground, this type of engine proves it still has its place for those who clock up the miles.
On the road, the C-Class Estate stands out for its excellent comfort. The suspension effectively absorbs road imperfections, while precise steering makes it easy to maneuver. On the highway, it excels with its sound insulation, making long journeys restful. However, while the performance is decent, the engine lacks the punch for rapid overtaking on secondary roads.
Technology: Leading the Way
Mercedes has spared no effort in equipping the C-Class Estate with advanced driver-assistance systems. From traffic sign recognition to adaptive cruise control, everything is designed to make the driver’s life easier. During maneuvers, the cameras provide exceptionally clear views, making parking a breeze. Although limited by regulations, semi-autonomous driving is also present. However, some touch controls can be unintuitive, requiring a bit of a learning curve.
Conclusion: A Station Wagon with (Almost) Everything You Need
The Mercedes C-Class Estate successfully combines elegance, comfort, and technology in a versatile package tailored to long journeys. Its impressive range and soothing road manners make it a standout choice for frequent travelers. However, its high price (starting at €55,450 for the 220d Avant-Garde version) and some minor issues with interior materials and touch controls might deter some buyers.
Pros:
- Remarkable fuel efficiency
- Exceptional driving comfort
- Increased interior space
- Advanced onboard technology
Cons:
- Premium price tag
- Frustrating touch controls at times
- Modest performance for power enthusiasts
