Blurring Boundaries: Bellabas at Contretype

François Bellabas brings his cutting-edge vision to Brussels with Unloading Overdrive, his first exhibition in Belgium, running from January 16 to March 13, 2025, at Contretype. This immersive experience bridges photography, AI, and digital art to explore the shifting boundaries between reality and the virtual.

The exhibition showcases a series of works rooted in Bellabas’s Motorstudies, a visual archive developed since 2016 that documents the urban sprawl of Los Angeles. These images are transformed through artificial intelligence into intricate, multi-layered artworks that challenge perceptions of space, memory, and technology.

Central to the exhibition is the concept of the “image-portal,” a gateway to both the mechanical and the organic, evoking a world constantly reshaped by data and networks. Installations include interactive environments where visitors can navigate shifting digital landscapes, offering a dynamic dialogue between physical and virtual realms.

Through video, photography, and 3D sculptures, Unloading Overdrive invites viewers to consider the impact of technology on memory and representation. It’s a thought-provoking journey into a space where art and innovation intersect, reflecting our evolving relationship with images in a digital world.
