Tarsila do Amaral at Guggenheim Bilbao: A Modernist Vision of Brazil

From February 21 to June 1, 2025, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents Tarsila do Amaral: Painting Modern Brazil, an exhibition dedicated to one of Brazil’s most influential modernist painters. Known for her vibrant colors and dreamlike compositions, Tarsila’s work captures the essence of a country in transformation.

Tarsila do Amaral – Autoportrait (Manteau rouge) [1923]
A key figure in the Modern Art Week of 1922, Tarsila blended European avant-garde movements like Cubism and Fauvism with the rich traditions and landscapes of Brazil. Her paintings offer a unique vision of a country balancing modernity and folklore, industry and nature.

Tarsila do Amaral – (Carnaval em Madureira, 1924)

I want to be the painter of my country, Tarsila once declared, and this commitment is evident in works like “Abaporu”, which became an icon of Brazilian modernism. The exhibition showcases her evolution, from her early Parisian influences to the bold, tropical imagery that defined her career.

Tarsila do Amaral- Urutu, 1928

Tarsila played a role in shaping Brazil’s cultural identity. Her paintings reflect not only the landscapes but also the complex social realities of her time. The exhibition at the Guggenheim Bilbao offers a rare opportunity to experience her work outside of Brazil, bringing her vision to a new audience.
