Renault Symbioz E-Tech 160 : The in between SUV that gets most things right
In Renault’s line up, the Symbioz feels like the missing link. Positioned between the Captur and the Austral, it targets drivers who still want a versatile family car without moving to full electric. We tested the Symbioz in its E Tech 160 version, the latest evolution of Renault’s hybrid system, designed to improve smoothness and performance while keeping fuel consumption in check.
A familiar yet more mature silhouette
With a length of around 4.41 metres, the Symbioz sits comfortably in the compact SUV segment. It feels easy to place in town while offering enough presence for motorway driving. The design follows Renault’s current visual language, with sharper lines and a more structured front end that looks more serious than the Captur, without reaching the imposing stance of the Austral. Details such as the Solarbay panoramic roof, which can turn opaque at the touch of a button, add a sense of modernity that quickly becomes part of daily life.

A cabin built for daily use
Inside, the Symbioz focuses on clarity and usability. The OpenR Link infotainment system with built in Google services is centred around a large vertical touchscreen, complemented by a fully digital driver display. The interface feels intuitive, responsive, and easy to understand from the first kilometres. Practicality is reinforced by the sliding rear bench, which allows you to choose between rear passenger comfort and extra boot space depending on the day. The materials are not luxurious, but the overall layout is coherent and well suited to family use.

E Tech 160: smoother and more responsive
Our test car was equipped with the E Tech 160 hybrid system, combining a petrol engine with two electric motors and a clutchless multi mode transmission. In urban and suburban driving, the Symbioz often runs in electric mode, delivering a calm and refined driving experience. The updated system feels smoother than earlier versions, with less noticeable transitions between power sources. Performance is more convincing when joining faster roads, while fuel consumption remains reasonable when driven with a relaxed approach.
Comfort first, without losing balance
On the road, the Symbioz clearly prioritises comfort. The suspension absorbs imperfections well, making long journeys easy and relaxed. At the same time, the car remains stable and predictable on winding roads, offering a reassuring balance rather than any sporty ambition. Steering and braking are tuned for smooth driving, encouraging a calm and efficient rhythm behind the wheel.

Our verdict
The Renault Symbioz E Tech 160 is a well judged answer to a very real need. It blends compact dimensions with family friendly practicality, modern technology, and a hybrid system that works best when driven smoothly. It may not excite with sharp dynamics or premium materials, but it delivers a convincing everyday experience for drivers looking for a versatile, efficient, and easy to live with SUV.
