Test drive – Omoda 9 : The Pleasant Surprise from Afar
Some cars attract attention before you even know their story. That is exactly what happened to us with the Omoda 9. For a week, this large plug-in hybrid SUV accompanied us through our daily journeys, on highways and in the city alike. More than once, we noticed curious glances turning toward it.
Still relatively unknown in Europe, Omoda arrives with some compelling arguments. Yet beyond the impressive specifications and generous equipment, it was the overall experience that left the strongest impression on us. Behind its Chinese origins, the Omoda 9 clearly aims for a premium positioning and seeks to appeal to those who value comfort and modernity in equal measure.
A Large SUV That Stands Out
At nearly 4.8 metres long, the Omoda 9 naturally commands attention. Its design combines the styling cues of a coupe-SUV with the elegance often associated with premium European models. The sloping roofline, flush door handles, large alloy wheels and carefully sculpted bodywork give it a strong presence on the road.
In reality, it is even more attractive in person than in photographs. Its sleek profile visually lightens what is, in fact, a substantial vehicle, while the rear light signature reinforces its modern and technological character. Throughout our test week, passers-by frequently took notice. For a brand that remains largely unfamiliar to the public, that is already quite an achievement.

An Interior Designed Around Comfort
Step inside the Omoda 9 and it immediately makes a positive impression. The materials feel pleasant to the touch, the build quality appears solid, and the overall atmosphere is closer to that of a premium SUV than that of a newcomer trying to cut costs.
Space is one of its greatest strengths. Both front and rear passengers enjoy excellent comfort levels. Rear occupants benefit from generous legroom and a sense of spaciousness rarely found in this segment. Heated, ventilated and even massaging seats, depending on the position, further enhance the premium travel experience.
In front of the driver, the large digital displays take centre stage without overwhelming the cabin. One pleasant surprise is the presence of several physical controls for essential functions. It is a practical choice that makes everyday use easier and avoids having to rely entirely on touchscreen menus.

A Powertrain Focused on Balance
Under the bonnet, the Omoda 9 combines a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with multiple electric motors. Together, they deliver impressive power reserves, ensuring the SUV feels effortless in virtually every situation.
Yet despite the headline figures, this is not a family SUV trying to masquerade as a sports car. The true strength of the powertrain lies in its smoothness. In daily driving, transitions between the different energy sources are discreet, with silence and serenity taking priority.
Its electric range is also among the model’s key strengths. For everyday journeys, it is entirely possible to spend most of the time driving without engaging the combustion engine, which further contributes to the calm and relaxed atmosphere on board.
Built for Comfortable Journeys
Behind the wheel, the Omoda 9 quickly reveals its personality. Everything has been designed to make long distances feel effortless. Sound insulation is particularly impressive, and the cabin remains remarkably peaceful even at motorway speeds.
The suspension setup clearly prioritises comfort. On major roads, the SUV absorbs imperfections effectively and creates a genuinely relaxing travelling experience. This is where it feels most at home, on long journeys, family trips and everyday commutes without stress.
Push harder and the vehicle’s weight becomes more noticeable. Despite its generous power output, the driving experience remains focused on stability and comfort rather than outright sportiness. This is not a flaw, merely a conscious choice. The Omoda 9 prefers to carry its occupants in a comfortable cocoon rather than impress through aggressive cornering performance.

Conclusion : A Newcomer Worth Watching
After a week behind the wheel, what impressed us most about the Omoda 9 was its overall coherence. It does not aim to reinvent the automotive world, but it succeeds in delivering a genuinely pleasant experience thanks to a well-balanced blend of comfort, technology and versatility.
For a brand that is still establishing itself on European roads, the result is remarkably convincing. The Omoda 9 feels like the work of a manufacturer that has carefully studied what customers appreciate about established European rivals before creating its own interpretation.
