Tarsila do Amaral at Guggenheim Bilbao: A Modernist Vision of Brazil
From February 21 to June 1, 2025, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao presents Tarsila do Amaral: Painting Modern Brazil, an exhibition dedicated to one of Brazil’s most influential modernist painters. Known for her vibrant colors and dreamlike compositions, Tarsila’s work captures the essence of a country in transformation.

« I want to be the painter of my country,« Tarsila once declared, and this commitment is evident in works like « Abaporu », which became an icon of Brazilian modernism. The exhibition showcases her evolution, from her early Parisian influences to the bold, tropical imagery that defined her career.

Tarsila played a role in shaping Brazil’s cultural identity. Her paintings reflect not only the landscapes but also the complex social realities of her time. The exhibition at the Guggenheim Bilbao offers a rare opportunity to experience her work outside of Brazil, bringing her vision to a new audience.
