Mercedes-Benz CLA 250+ : Why is it the big winner of the year?

Elected Car of the Year 2026, the new electric Mercedes-Benz CLA quickly stood out on paper. After spending a full week with the CLA 250+, we wanted to understand what truly justifies this title once the press releases are left behind.

Dimensions and exterior design

The CLA remains instantly recognisable. Its low, stretched silhouette keeps the elegant four-door coupé profile that has always defined the model. The proportions feel balanced, the sloping roofline enhances its sporty stance, and the design details subtly serve both style and aerodynamics.
On the road, the CLA stands out without being showy. It does not advertise its electric nature aggressively, relying instead on a confident and refined presence.

Interior design and ergonomics

Inside, the step forward is obvious. The cabin feels more premium than before, with a level of perceived quality that would not feel out of place in a higher segment. Materials are carefully selected, and the overall atmosphere blends technology with comfort.
The Superscreen defines the experience; a 10-inch driver display, a 14-inch central screen, and an optional 14-inch passenger screen, all powered by the new MB.OS system. Despite the abundance of screens, daily use remains intuitive. Space has improved, particularly in the rear, and practicality is enhanced by a 405-litre boot and a 101-litre frunk on the electric version.

Powertrains, range and charging

The CLA lineup keeps a multi-energy approach, with mild-hybrid petrol engines still available. Our focus, however, was on the electric CLA 250+, which best represents Mercedes’ ambitions.
With its 200 kW (272 hp) motor and 85 kWh usable battery, the CLA 250+ delivers strong real-world efficiency. During our winter test week, we recorded around 622 km of range, with an average consumption of 13.7 kWh/100 km. In mixed driving, figures around 600 km are realistic, while motorway range settles closer to 490 km.
Charging is one of its strongest assets. Thanks to its 800-volt architecture, the CLA supports up to 320 kW DC charging, allowing a 10 to 80 percent charge in about 21 minutes. Under ideal conditions, it can recover roughly 325 km in 10 minutes, making long journeys far easier to manage.

Driving experience

Behind the wheel, the CLA 250+ feels smooth and reassuring. Rear-wheel drive provides natural balance, while acceleration is strong yet progressive, with a 0 to 100 km/h time of 6.7 seconds.
What stands out most is how effortless the car feels. Energy management is efficient, consumption remains controlled, and the CLA never forces you to adapt your driving habits. On the motorway it is stable and quiet; in town, it feels refined and easygoing.

Conclusion

With the CLA 250+, Mercedes-Benz delivers a highly convincing electric saloon that goes far beyond a simple technical showcase.

+

  • Premium, technology-focused interior
  • Ultra-fast charging that simplifies long trips
  • Smooth, balanced and reassuring driving experience

  • Rear-seat space still limited for taller passengers
  • Screen-heavy layout may require an adjustment period
  • Charging performance can vary on some 400-volt chargers

After a week of real-world use, the Car of the Year 2026 title feels fully justified. The CLA 250+ convinces not by exaggeration, but through balance, efficiency and a rare sense of coherence that makes electric mobility feel natural.
