Alice Diop Brings Geste de Consolation to Art Basel Paris with Miu Miu
For its third year as an official partner of the Art Basel Paris Public Program, Miu Miu has invited French filmmaker Alice Diop to create Geste de Consolation at the Palais d’Iéna.
The project continues the reflection initiated in Fragments for Venus, Diop’s 2025 film for Miu Miu Women’s Tales. For her first exhibition, the filmmaker brings together cinema, photography, sculpture, literature, dance and music to explore how Black women have been represented throughout art history.

The journey opens with a photograph by Zanele Muholi and a video installation composed of archival images and film excerpts. Visitors then enter Chambre à soi, a colourful living room and public library featuring books that have shaped Diop’s thinking.
Live readings, choreography by Nadia Beugré and performances by Angel Bat Dawid complete the programme. The exhibition ends beneath Simone Leigh’s monumental bronze sculpture Sentinel (Mami Wata), inspired by the powerful West African water spirit.
Conceived like a cinematic montage, Geste de Consolation offers an intimate reflection on memory, representation and repair.
