And here goes the interview with the first question from photographer Illya Knight:
What makes you differ from other photographers?
I don’t really know of any other wedding photographers that crank Scandinavian black metal whilst lovingly editing a set of photos from the happiest day of a couples lives, so maybe that.
And we continue with some questions of our own:
What is the first thing you do when you get up in the morning?
After trying to contort into something that resembles “vertical” (pro tip: having your workstation right next to your bed is a bad, bad idea), it’s emails, phone, then emailing myself, in some vicious loop carefully engineered to avoid dealing with any real responsibilities.
What is the last thing that really surprised you?
The power of just asking. It’s really nuts. Such as asking your favourite artist if they want a video/photo shoot/collaboration. No matter how big or small you think they are. It’s nuts what can come out of it. Ask, ask, ask. Friends, artists, whoever.
What do you want to transmit with your photography?
Very superficial stuff at the moment. Interesting light & general moodiness, and people’s natural character. I like to take baby steps and narrow the focus so once I’ve got a handle on smaller things I’ll probably start thinking more critically about what I want to transmit. I’ve not yet done any fashion work, so that might be the first playground for that. And I’ve got a few ideas.
What are you focusing on right now?
Trying to get the presenter of a well-syndicated kids show I watched as a child to be a part of a hip hop music video I’m filming. It’s proving a little bit of a challenge.
Around that lots of personal stills work, understanding light better, etc. I just picked up a medium format TLR camera, so that’s going to be a large part of experimental work from now on.
What are your dreams for the future?
Stay happy, shoot more, travel more, wake up earlier.
What would you ask the next artist/photographer that we feature on GUSMEN (without knowing who it is)?
How do you go about reconciling (either by standard or style) your personal taste in images with the work you’re producing yourself?
