Mercedes E300e & E400e 2024 : Major Technological Overhaul

The new generation of this historic model is further proof of Mercedes-Benz’s expertise : it combines comfort and technology. Its new electronic architecture allows for a comprehensive digital experience.
While the trend is towards SUVs and fully electric models, Mercedes demonstrates that with the new generation of the E-Class, sedans still have a say. Even in their combustion versions and especially with the support of the hybrid engine, the E-Class remains a safe bet and perpetuates the tradition.
We were fortunate enough to test the E300e and E400e versions.

Dimensions : Slightly More Spacious

The new E-Class has the proportions of a classic three-box sedan: a short front overhang, a long engine hood followed by a very recessed cabin, and a balanced rear overhang. Compared to its predecessor, it is 25 mm longer, 28 mm wider, and slightly taller. The extended wheelbase of 2 cm mainly benefits the rear passengers, offering more knee and legroom.

Exterior Design

The exterior design of the E-Class remains true to a certain classicism. The lines are smooth and the proportions classic, with refined details such as the stars as a rear light signature. The three-dimensional grille and high-performance LED headlights enhance its elegant look. The flush door handles, available as an option, add a modern touch.

At the rear, the two-part LED lights with a star-shaped contour offer a distinctive design both day and night. The character lines on the side highlight the sporty nature of the car, while the hood’s bulges reinforce its imposing appearance.

Interior Design

The interior of the E-Class is a true technological marvel. The dashboard, with the optional MBUX Superscreen, extends to the central screen and creates an immersive digital experience. The 14.4-inch central touchscreen and the 12.3-inch passenger screen allow access to numerous applications and entertainment options.

The seats, although slightly firm but still comfortable, are enveloping and designed for optimal comfort on long journeys. High-quality materials, such as Tonka Nappa leather, and customizable ambient lighting enhance the sense of luxury. The storage spaces are well thought out, and the seamless central console adds to the overall elegance of the cabin.

The trunk offers a capacity of 540 liters. It is important to note that the trunk volume is reduced by 170 liters in the plug-in hybrid versions compared to the combustion models.

Ergonomics

In terms of ergonomics, the E-Class stands out for its intuitive use of multiple features. The controls are well-placed and easy to reach, and the MBUX system offers a smooth and responsive user interface. This interface consists of three screens: one behind the steering wheel, a central touchscreen, and another smaller touchscreen in front of the passenger. The infotainment system is very well-equipped and user-friendly, though one could almost get lost in the myriad of options it offers. The front passenger screen is designed to minimize driver distraction by turning off when not in use.

A selfie and video camera provided with the MBUX Superscreen option is also available on top of the dashboard. Of course, the camera can only be used when the vehicle is stationary. It allows us to participate in online conferences with video, and take personal photos and videos. We tested it, and the result is impressive.

Powertrains of the E300e and E400e

The plug-in hybrid range of the E-Class includes the E300e and E400e models. The E300e combines a 204 hp combustion engine with a 129 hp electric motor, offering a total power output of 333 hp. The more powerful E400e pairs a 252 hp combustion engine with a 129 hp electric motor, for a combined output of 381 hp.

These models are equipped with a 25.4 kWh battery, allowing an electric range of 84 to 118 km depending on the version. Charging from 10 to 80% takes only 20 minutes thanks to a 55 kW DC charger, an unprecedented feature for this technology.

Road Behavior and Driving Comfort

On the road, the E-Class stands out for its exemplary behavior. The pneumatic suspension and rear-wheel steering completely transform its handling, offering surprising maneuverability for a sedan almost 5 meters long. The large wheels absorb road irregularities well, and the enhanced soundproofing reinforces driving comfort.

The steering is precise and the chassis stable, making the E-Class enjoyable to drive even on long journeys. The hybrid engine offers impressive performance, with acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds for the E400e. However, the sound of the combustion engine can lack charm under full load.

The acoustic comfort is exceptional, with soundproofing that effectively filters out external noise. The Airmatic suspension, available as an option, and the rear-wheel steering ensure a smooth and stable ride, even on uneven roads.

Prices of the E300e and E400e in Belgium

In Belgium, E-Class prices start at around 62,000 euros for the base versions.
The E300e 4MATIC plug-in hybrid in AMG Line trim is available at around 81,000 euros.
The more powerful E400e 4MATIC AMG Line is offered at around 93,000 euros.

These prices can increase significantly with additional options and packages, such as the MBUX Superscreen, AMG Line versions, or the Airmatic suspension.

Our Opinion on the Car

The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a success in terms of comfort, technology, and design. It maintains a certain classicism while integrating modern features and efficient hybrid powertrains. The advantages include exceptional driving comfort, well-thought-out ergonomics, and advanced technological content.

However, some drawbacks remain. The driving experience may lack excitement for those seeking strong sensations, and the trunk of the PHEV versions is reduced to 370 liters, which can be limiting for some users. Additionally, the high prices and numerous paid options can significantly increase the final bill.

In conclusion, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class remains a safe bet in the luxury sedan segment. It offers a perfect balance between tradition and modernity, and despite a few minor flaws, it continues to seduce with its comfort, technology, and timeless elegance.
