Cupra Ateca : Expansion of the Range

The 2023 Cupra Ateca, a revisited version of this sporty SUV, caught our attention during a full week of testing. As a brand derived from Seat, Cupra aims to position itself as a more sporty and exclusive alternative. We got behind the wheel of the 150 hp version of this vehicle to test its performance, design, and technological innovations. Here is our detailed review of this experience.

Noteworthy Presence on the Road

The Cupra Ateca boasts impressive dimensions with a length of 4.38 m, a width of 1.84 m, and a height of 1.61 m. These proportions give it a robust presence on the road. The exterior design is marked by distinctive elements such as the copper “Tribal” logo on the grille, standard two-tone wheels, and optional copper wheels. The redesigned front bumper and rear diffuser add a touch of sportiness while respecting Cupra’s visual DNA. We particularly appreciate the four exhaust pipes on the VZ version, enhancing the vehicle’s dynamic image, even though we didn’t get to test them directly.

Comfort and Technology at Your Fingertips

Inside, the Ateca stands out with its leather and microfiber bucket seats, offering both comfort and support. The steering wheel, with its copper accents and “carbon” effect, integrates satellite buttons for quick access to essential functions such as starting and changing driving modes. The central console, equipped with numerous physical buttons, facilitates use without navigating through complex menus, which is a real plus in terms of ergonomics. The customizable digital instrumentation and wireless connectivity with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto add a modern touch to the package.

A Wide Range for All Needs

The major novelty of this 2023 version lies in the expansion of the engine range. In addition to the 300 hp 2.0-liter TSI engine, two new options are added: a 150 hp 1.5 TSI and a 190 hp 2.0 TSI. These engines are paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch DSG automatic transmission. We tested the 1.5 TSI, which proves to be powerful enough for daily use while offering moderate fuel consumption.

Comfort and Dynamism in Everyday Driving

Our driving experience with the 150 hp version revealed a perfect balance between comfort and dynamism. Even with this entry-level engine, the Ateca handles confidently on the road, thanks to well-tuned suspension and precise steering. Whether in the city or on the highway, the Ateca is versatile and pleasant to drive. However, highway noise insulation could be improved, especially on poor roads.

Justified Added Value Compared to the Seat Ateca?

Comparing the Cupra Ateca to its counterpart from Seat reveals notable differences in performance and design. While the Seat Ateca offers good value for money, the Cupra positions itself as a more exclusive and sporty version, thus justifying a significant price difference. The more powerful engines and high-end finishes of the Cupra reinforce this differentiation, although the 150 hp version we tested offers similar performance to its equivalent at Seat.

Prices in Belgium

In Belgium, the starting price of the Cupra Ateca is €44,580 for the 150 hp 1.5 TSI version, and €49,640 for the 190 hp 2.0 TSI. The VZ 300 hp version, on the other hand, starts at €55,775. These prices are significantly higher than those of the Seat Ateca, which starts at €33,764. Cupra justifies this difference with more powerful engines and superior equipment, although attractive discounts may be available during showroom conditions.

Our Final Verdict

After a week behind the wheel of the 150 hp Cupra Ateca, we can affirm that it is a performant and versatile SUV. Its strengths include its spaciousness, balance between comfort and dynamism, and distinctive stylistic details. However, the high price and fuel consumption remain aspects to consider. Although the 150 hp version is less powerful, it offers an accessible and enjoyable alternative to drive. In summary, the Cupra Ateca stands out as a relevant choice for those looking for a sporty and well-equipped SUV ready to make a mark on the roads.
